This was taken at the bottom of the valley floor looking up at this 1000 foot waterfall in the Waipio Valley. We took a driving tour of this valley with a local man who was around when the Tsunami hit this valley in the 1950's. He was telling us that he was on his 1 1/2 hr walk to school up at the top of the mountain when the wave hit. It was about 30 - 50 feet tall and went about a mile up the valley. You can see how lush it is here. This area is where Jurassic Park was filmed. |
This field is actually a 'pond' to some extent. The driver that took us to the valley floor grows Taro here. They look like large lily pad leaves that grow out of the water on l foot stems. There is running water that is continually fed into these fields. |
Laurie in front of a ginger bush and holding various flowers that the driver had picked for the women. The red flower was a double hibicus. |
Traci smelling the sweet fragrance of the white flower. It had a wonderful fragrance. |
This is the river we actually drove through (or the driver of our van took us through) on the way to his Taro fields. |
This is the falls that we stopped for lunch at after our tour of the Waipio Valley. Laurie and BT are pictured here with the waterfalls in the background. You can just barely make out the kids in the background to the right of the falls that are swinging into the river on a rope. Shane, Laurie and BT swam across this river to the waterfall and actually climbed up into the waterfall and got in behind it. To the right of the photo (and not in the photo) the ocean meets this river with a fury of waves and currents. There were plenty of people surfing the waves into the 'river' area from the ocean. |
